DR VANDANA SHIVA is a scientist, ecologist, author and winner of the Sydney Peace Prize. She also featured in the documentary “Dirt!”. In celebration of 2015, the Year of the Soil, Dr Vandana Shiva will give a talk on the importance of seed freedom and food democracy for the future of our food and land. Dr Shiva will also address the US human trials of GM banana.

JOEL SALATIN of Polyface Farms is an American organic farmer and author featured in the documentary “Food Inc”. Joel will give an introduction to Dr Shiva’s talk. Public meetings with Joel Berg, US anti-hunger activist, during October 2014

Joel Berg is a leading U.S. activist, researcher, and media spokesperson on domestic hunger and poverty. He is Executive Director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, a not for profit organization which works to “enact innovative solutions to help society move ‘beyond the soup kitchen’ to ensure economic and food self-sufficiency for all Americans”. He is the author of  “All you can eat: how hungry is America?”

Joel will be in Australia as a guest of the Sydney-based Right to Food Coalition, and will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural food security conference being held in Sydney on 13 & 14 October 2014. He will also be holding public meetings across Australia during the month of October.

SFFA July 2014 Meeting Presentation Notes – Oxfam GROW Campaign

Oxfam Australia GROW campaign aims to tackle the many complex issues of global hunger and food security. Oxfam has been looking at all aspects of food security and recognise that the most important issues include :-
The changing climate
Lack of investment in small scale producers
The growing phenomena of land grabs
The actions of large global food companies
The actions of consumers
Sky Rocketing food prices
Oxfam encourages individuals to take a range of actions in their own lives that can assist in creating a fair food future. Oxfam works with the worlds 10 biggest food companies to ensure that their practices are not unfairly disadvantaging poor farmers through out their supply  chains and we work with governments to ensure investment in small scale agriculture and work to secure strong climate mitigation targets and to do our fair share in terms of assisting communities around the globe adapt to climate change impacts.

About our speaker Debbie Hunt

Debbie has a B Social Science (Politics and Policy) and a Masters of Social Change and Development specialising in Food Security and Rural Sustainable Development. Debbie has worked for Oxfam in the role of the NSW/ACT State Campaign and Engagement Coordinator for the past 4 years, prior to this role she worked at the NSW volunteer coordinator with Make Poverty History for 2 years. She is a mother of 4 amazing young adults/ teenagers and lives on a small organic farm on the Southern Highlands of NSW. Currently she is coordinating Oxfam’s GROW campaign, which advocates for sustainable development, reducing climate change and increasing food security.

Confirmed keynote speakers include Joel Berg (New York City Coalition for Hunger), Catherine Harding (The Good Foundation/Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food), Martin Laverty (Catholic Health Australia), Professor David Adams (University of Tasmania) and Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo (Yaama Dhiyaan Hospitality & Training Centre/Gardeners Lodge Café).


Early bird rates will be offered until 22 August 2014. Subsidised and scholarship conference tickets are available for eligible participants (see website for more details).
