We would like to see the National Food Plan Working Group expanded to be more representative of a broad range of stakeholders. We also recommend that the Working Group adopt a similar approach to that taken by the Scottish government and many cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and London in developing their food policies, which have been strengthened through encouraging public debate which gathers and disseminates information simultaneously.

GE presentation with Frances Murrell from MADGE
In July 2010  Melbourne-based Frances Murrell, co-founder of Mothers Are Demystifying Genetic Engineering (MADGE)  spoke on  concerns regarding health and food security.

Frances was profiled this year in this piece in the Weekend Australian magazine. She recently spoke at an international conference on GM.

We should be selling the milk and not the cow:

Catherine Rogers  spoke on  what we know about foreign ownership of agricultural land and its impact on future food security

Over the last few days, the question of rapidly increasing foreign ownership of Australian agricultural land has been headline news, highlighting the lack of planning by State and Federal governments for Australia’s future food security.

Catherine Rogers has been investigating sovereign wealth funds and the implications for Australian farming land, and will speak about who is taking up this issue and what is currently on the table to ensure we don’t ‘sell the farm’ before we notice.

You can view Frances Murrell’s talk on  YouTube.

Late last year an alliance of consumers, health workers and sustainability advocates called on the NSW Government to establish an independent Food Policy Council to develop an integrated policy response to food security challenges.

In september 2010 the Sydney Food Fairness Alliance presented its case for a food policy during a special presentation at NSW Parliament.

‘NSW consumers and producers are increasingly concerned about the cost of diet-related disease, the loss of agricultural land to development, climate change and water insecurity’, said SFFA spokesperson and Eco Justice Coordinator at the Edmund Rice Centre, Jill Finnane.‘The Sydney Food Fairness Alliance urges the NSW Government to respond to these challenges by developing and implementing an integrated, whole of government food policy’, Jill continued.

The presentation at NSW Parliament canvased the value of forming an independent Food Policy Council.

‘The SFFA submits that the NSW Government must convene an independent Food Policy Council to meaningfully engage community, business and government stakeholders to respond to the challenge of securing an affordable, healthy food supply for NSW, now and into the future’, said Jill.

The presentation was hosted by Macarthur region MPs Philip Costa, Geoff Corrigan, Andrew McDonald and Graham West.

The keynote speaker was David Mason, an expert on urban agriculture.
